The shamisen is a fragile instrument, so proper care is important!
HANDLING
Always handle the shamisen with care. The shamisen should be flat or in a stand if you have to put it down during a playing session. DO NOT lean it up against something, such as a wall or countertop. It will likely fall and break.
CLEANING
After each playing session, use a microfiber or special shamisen cloth to wipe down the sao and dou. It is important to remove skin oils as these break down the lacquer and skins.
STORAGE
A hard case is the safest method of storage. It is also a good idea to place your shamisen in a washi paper bag (available from most shamisen sellers) to help protect it from excess moisture. Keep the shamisen in a dry, cool place to help the skins last longer.
